Winter Beaver Safari

As the chances of seeing the beavers are slimmer over the winter, this trip takes us on the trail of the European beaver where we visit amazing beaver dams, beaver ponds, chewed trees and beaver tracks and trails on a Rewilding estate. We spend the second part of the safari sitting by the beaver ponds so wrap up warmly, but we can’t guarantee their appearance.

We’ll also tell the story of the history of beavers in Scotland, how they re-appeared in Perthshire and why they are so important to the ecology of our rivers and wetlands. This is a great trip for families as everyone can collect their own beaver chips and beaver-chewed sticks!

PRICE: £60pp or £180 for family bookings (2 adults + 2 children)
GROUP SIZE: 2 – 8 people
TIME: 2-2.5 hours
AVAILABLE: Mid October – early April on Saturdays

Meeting time: Meeting near Alyth, 2 hrs before dusk – the exact time and location will be sent after booking.

Lesson on beaver conservation plus spotting them Marvelous experience about beavers ecology. It was no just to be able to see the beavers (some of them, interacting, from eru close), but all the information given about its ecology, conservations and issues with human presence. I strongly recommended it.

Beaver Safari - one of the best things I have ever done! The Half Day Beaver Safari is one of the very best things I have ever spent money on! Jean was an incredible guide, super knowledgable about the ecosystems beavers have been reintroduced into and how well they look after the natural landscape. I couldn't quite believe we would actually see the animals in the while, but there was a group of at least six beavers who merrily went about there evening eating, grooming and playing while we watched from the riverbank. A wild otter even joined in for a brief appearance too! Learned a lot about bats too; was an unforgettable experience and extremely highly recommended!

Fascinating Beaver Safari We had a wonderful experience watching the beavers with Joan who was our guide in a small group scheduled evening beaver safari. Joan was extremely knowledgeable and shared plenty of information about the family, daily habits, diet and how they ended up here. I thought they were deliberately reintroduced in the area but that was not the case. It was a delight watching the beaver family go about their business in the cool air in the evening. One of the beavers was floating lazily towards us on our side of the bank right in our line of sight until he/she caught a whiff of our scent and panicked and quickly submerged underwater. It demonstrated what Joan had been telling us- that they have very poor eyesight and rely on their keen sense of smell. The whole activity took about 2 hours but you are welcome to stay on longer to watch the beavers if you want.

Pre-Booking inquiries and administrative details was handled promptly by Daniele and everything was seamless. Well done.

A truly memorable experience We went on a half day beaver safari with Perthshire Wildlife, and absolutely loved it. Our expert guide, Jean, was informative and friendly, and it was a very relaxed experience. The format was excellent - the first section, near Alyth, involved seeing the evidence of the beavers in the landscape and hearing about their ecological importance (and why we should be encouraging them rather than getting rid of them - so sad to hear that so many landowners and farmers can’t see past the myths and misinformation) the second involved watching beavers in the river Erricht, busily collecting and eating greenery from near the banks - absolutely fascinating, and we felt so privileged to get so close to them, and that we saw so many, both in and out of the water. Within seconds of arriving at the river we saw beavers - far quicker than we expected.
We can’t recommend this highly enough - a truly memorable experience (and great value for money)!
