After having a wonderful Half-day Safari yesterday I thought I would share what you will enjoy seeing on our tours.
We started off at a peaceful Rewilding Estate where we visited lots of beaver pools, dams and coppiced trees. Sadly, it was quite overcast as I had been looking forward to seeing lots of Black Darter dragonflies close to the first beaver pools. Their numbers have greatly increased since the arrival of the beavers; other dragonflies and damselflies too.
We were very lucky to see the Estate’s herd of beautiful Exmoor ponies, including a few foals, come down to the beaver pools to drink. These ponies, as well as looking beautiful, are very useful for creating many micro-habitats for invertebrates and a diverse range of plants.
We then moved to site number 2 by the river where we had wonderful views of Kingfishers zooming up and down the river and even perching close to where we were sitting on the riverbank. Sadly they were too fast for photos!
Seeing one of this years kits – still tiny at about 30cm including the tail – feeding on top of a leaning tree was amazing. And also very funny as it stomped its way along the trunk! The adults were busy swimming up and down the river and collecting tasty food – Willow branches and Sweet cicely. Our clients couldn’t believe how close they came to us!
